A Great Article on the Problems of Translating/Subtitling Movies

Over at Global Voices in English, Lee Yoo Eun talks about the problems of translating from English to Korean.

Some interesting problems are:

  • The space limitations – no more than 16 words per screen
  • How to deal with honorifics needed in Korean but not used in English, and
  • Most amusingly, blowback from Netizens who are unhappy with the translations (only in Korea!)

Lee also touches on (semi-intentional?) problems in translating news.
