Han Soo-san Explores Love and Forgiveness

Han Soo-san

From over at the Korea Herald, an article on author Han Soo-san, whose life is interesting on several levels. First, he ran afoul of the Chun Doo-hwan regime in 1981, and pursuant to arrest and torture, temporarily retreated to Japan to “pursue forgiveness.” Han is also interesting in that he seems to be an avid early adopter of technology, which is a relatively unusual thing for a 64 year old.

It also interests me how the Herald chooses its words when it talks about the past:

the novel places Han himself as a key character along with Cardinal Kim and details a particularly painful incident that stemmed from the country’s tainted and shameful past.

Just a small hint of how large history still looms in Korean literature.
