Kim In-suk interviewed in the Herald – makes a nod towards genre fiction

Kim-In-suk

As I was working on the Wikipedia page for Kim In-suk, yesterday, I came across a nice little article in the Korea Herald. It is called Award-winning author publishes new book inspired by life in Bali, which is a rather poor predictor of what the book actually contains.^^

Possible the most interesting thing Kim says is this:

But Kim says she still longs to write something different, something new.

“It’s like a ballad singer wanting to try hip-hop,” Kim said at a press meeting held in central Seoul, Tuesday. “I’m not so sure about my abilities. But I’d totally write a genre fiction or a romance novel. I am always up for changes.”

This is clearly another Korean author with some kind of feel for the pulse of international literature. Having only read her The Long Road, which was a rather harrowing story of three men on a boat (to vastly oversimplify), and yet excellently told, I think she may be under-rating her skills.^^

And genre stories are what sells in English.
