Kim Young-ha’s A Murderer’s Way To Memorize

Kim Young-ha, a friend of this site, has released a new novel A Murderer’s Way To Memorize (in Korean). Aligned with that release is an animation..

Here is the animation (and below it is a quick translation courtesy of our AWESOME intern Kim Ha Ryung):

Ms. Kim notes that:

please do state that the creator of the book trailer is Eean Lee. I heard that it took seven month for him to complete the video (plus 1700 super computers in Germany were used for the programming) He also have created the book trailer of “무슨 일이 일어났는지 아무도” (No One Knows What Happened), also written by Kim Young-ha, made in a similar style with this one. Both are quite inspiring

The last time that I killed people was already 25 years ago, or 26 years ago, or sometime around that. The power that drove me until then was not an impulse, or an abnormal sexuality like what people generally would think. It was inconvenience: a hope that more perfect pleasure will be feasible. I repeated saying myself every time I buried the victims:
I’ll do it better next time.
The reason why I stopped murdering was that hope was no more available.

I once wrote a daily record. A dispassionate re-enacting, maybe I kind of needed it. I thought that I should write what I did wrong and therefore what I felt, so that I would not repeat the painful mistake again.

I took a poetry course for quite a long time. (…) The lecturer made me laugh  several times and twice praised poems that I wrote.

You called me telling that you made a doctor’s appointment. I lost my temper, shouting, and then Eunhee said after being silent for a while.

Nowadays I fall again and again. I fall while riding a bicycle and fall over a stone.

Suddenly I couldn’t remember how to make a call. Should I press the ‘call’ button first, or press the number and then the ‘call’?

“Therefore, in the void there is no form, feeling, conception, volition or consciousness, no eye, ear, nose, tongue, body or mind (…)”

Death is standing besides me. I can know it. I’ll die soon.
