Three literary works by Korean authors have made this year’s “Best List” published by Germany’s Society for the Promotion of African, Asian and Latin American Literature.

The works include poet Ko Un’s “Flowers of a Moment,” author Yi Mun-yol’s “The Poet,” and Jo Kyung-ran’s “Tongue.” The three are all regarded as significant literary achievements, but none emerged as bestsellers in the Korean market.

Critics, authors and literary journalists from the society praised Ko as one of the great lyricists of the age. They commended Yi for his in-depth historical novel and dubbed Jo’s work “surprisingly elegant.”

The German literature society has selected seven books for the list every quarter since late 2009.

Yi Mun-yol’s “The Poet,” is one of his criminally underrated works. KTLIT reviewed it here. Jo Kyung-ran’s “Tongue” was famous internationally and also the subject of a plagiarism scandal. And, Ko-un is just Ko-un.^^

Anyway, good news for the internationalization of Korean literature.
