My name is Charles I’d like to begin by thanking TNM for giving me the opportunity to speak here today. And thank you all for listening.

안녕하십니까? 제 이름은 찰스 입니다. 이 자리에서 연설을 할 수 있게 되어 영광입니다. 연설의 기회를 허락해 준 TNM측에도 감사드립니다.

In the past, the process for communicating Korea to the international world has been crimped and mediated.  And it has generally failed to communicate what Korea is.

과거에는 대한민국이 세계와 소통을 하는 데 중간 채널을 거쳐야 해서 매우 번거로왔을 뿐 아니라 한국의 진면모를 보여주기가 요원했습니다.

This process either took place through major media chains or major publishing firms. This meant, generally, that the results of decisions made by a few people only reached a few people.

중간 채널의 역할은 주요 미디어나 출판사가 했으며, 담당자 몇몇이 머리를 맞대어 보여준 한국은 결국 소수의 시청자나 독자의 관심을 끄는 정도였습니다.

Blogs, on the other hand are unmediated and allow virtually limitless content.  Furthermore, the audience is potentially limitless.

하지만 블로그는 중간 채널이 없으며 거의 무한한 양의 콘텐츠를 담아낼 수 있습니다. 잠재 시청자 및 독자의 수도 무한합니다.

Communication is now available to any parties who want to communicate, and Korea can benefit from this.

이제 커뮤니케이션은 소통하고자 하는 어느 누구에게나 열려있으며 한국은 이를 십분 활용해야 합니다.

I have a blog about Korean Modern Literature. This is not just translation of Korea to the outside world, it is actually about “translation” of Korean literature for the outside world.

저도 한국에 대한 블로그를 하나 운영하고 있습니다. 정확히 말하면 한국의 현대 문학에 대한 블로그입니다. 단순히 한국을 광고하려는 블로그가 아니라 한국 문학을 세계에 소개하기 위해 “번역”된 한국 문학을 논하는 블로그입니다.

Korean Modern literature is a love of mine. This blog is, I hope, a small part of the effort to overcome the international lack of awareness of Korean literature.

저는 한국의 현대 문학을 사랑합니다. 전 세계에 만연한 한국문학에 대한 무지에 제 블로그를 통해 자그마한 등불을 밝힐 수 있으면 좋겠습니다.

제 블로그는 파트너와 함께 운영합니다. 아이러니하게 제 파트너는 한국 출신으로 현재 캘리포니아에서 한국어를 가르치고 있는데 저는 미국 출신으로한국에서 영어를 가르치고 있습니다. 전 세계가 읽을 수 있도록, 파트너와 저는 서로를 보완해 번역된 한국 문학을 포스팅하고, 때로는 직접 번역 및 감수를 하기도 합니다.

Koreans are interested in the prospects of a Korean Nobel Prize in Literature, as they should be. Park Wan-suh, Park Kyong-ni, Yi Mun-yol, even poet Ko Un would all be deserving awardees in my mind.

한국인들은 노벨문학상에 대한 기대가 큽니다. 물론 한국 문학의 수준은 노벨 문학상을 기대할 만큼 높습니다.  제 생각에 소설가 박완서, 고 박경리, 이문열, 그리고 고은 시인은 노벨상을 받고도 남음이 있습니다.

The problem is that the world does not hear enough about these authors.

문제는 국제 사회가 이 분들을 비롯한 여러 한국 작가들에 대해 너무도 모른다는 것입니다.

How can blogs help?

어떻게 하면 될까요?

Let us examine this from the point of view of posting articles about Korea. I have readers from 52 countries and 55% of my readership is outside of Korea, mainly the United States, Canada and the UK.  When I post information about conferences in Korea, I get immediate responses – mainly questions for more information. The demand for information about Korea is out there.

단순히 블로그를 통해 알리는 방법부터 보겠습니다. 제 블로그는 현재 52개국에 독자를 두고 있으며, 55%의 독자가 미국, 캐나다, 영국 등 해외에 거주합니다. 제가 한국에서 열리는 컨퍼런스에 대한 소식을 블로그에 올리면 보다 상세한 정보를 요하는 댓글이 바로 올라오곤 합니다. 한국 소식에 대한 수요는 얼마든지 있습니다.

This fall, I will be presenting at a conference in New Zealand, talking about Korean Literature. I will be on a panel with three other speakers, two of whom met me on my blog, one from Korea, one from New Zealand.

올해 가을에 저는 뉴질랜드의 컨퍼런스에 참석, 한국 문학에 대해 발표할 예정입니다. 컨퍼런스 패널에는 저를 비롯해 3 명의 다른 발표자가 참가하는데, 그 중 2 명은 저와 블로그에서 인연을 맺은 사람들로, 한 명은 한국에, 한 명은 뉴질랜드에 거주합니다.

What blogs allow is a world of links and searches. As you all know, people are ON The Web, blogs, facebook, and tweets are some of the tools we can use to ensure that the world properly knows Korea.

블로그의 장점은 링크와 검색 기능에 있습니다. 아시다시피 현대인들은 항상 인터넷에 접속해 있습니다. 인터넷, 블로그, 페이스북, 트위터 등은 세계에 한국을 알릴수 있는 유용한 도구입니다.

There is another way blogs can help.

블로그를 활용해 커뮤니티를 결성하는 방법도 있습니다.

Another way to ensure that the Korean story is told is to build links between people in Korea. The blogosphere has already been critical in this effort. From the expatriate point of view, organizations like 2S2 have already built community. In Seoul, Bundang, Daegu, and other towns, expatriates are meeting each other in person, because they have first met through blogs.

블로고스피어라고도 하는 이 블로그 커뮤니티는 한국을 알리는 데 더 큰 효과를 발휘합니다. 한국에 거주하는 외국인들이 모여 만든 2S2라는 단체는 이 블로그 커뮤니티의 한 예입니다. 서울, 분당, 대구 및 다른 지역에 거주하는 2S2 커뮤니티의 구성원들은 수시로 오프라인 모임을 갖습니다. 모두 블로그를 통해 인연을 맺은 덕입니다.

But there is more. Blogging has also made connections between expatriates and Koreans.

한국에 거주하는 외국인이 블로그를 통해 한국인들과 연계하는 것도 어렵지 않습니다.

This year expatriates filled one table at the KBBA First Annual Blog awards. This year, expatriates are working hard with Tatter&Media to build a platform for understanding and translation.

올해 한국블로그산업협회가 주관한 첫번째 블로그 시상식에 적지 않은 수의 한국 거주 외국인들이 수상 후보로 참석했습니다. 현재 그 외국인들은 Tatter&Media사와 협력해 번역 및 상호 이해 증진을 위한 플랫폼을 구축하고 있습니다.

These contacts would not have been possible even three years ago.

3년 전만 해도 실현 가능성이 없어 보이던 일입니다.

This work, of course, is only a piggyback on the outstanding work TNM has already done in the Korean blogosphere.  TNM’s vision of a blog media network is a vision of a platform that can bring Korea to the world, and the world to Korea.

블로그를 통한 교류는 물론 TNM이 한국 블로고스피어에 공헌한 업적을 바탕이 되었기에 가능한 일입니다. 블로그 미디어 네트워크에 대한 TNM의 비전이야말로 한국을 세계로, 또한 세계를 한국으로 연결시키는 플랫폼입니다.

It is a great dream that Nanoomi will become a new blog-media network for both English-language bloggers and Korean bloggers. – that it will use a social translation platform “looah” to bridge language and cultural differences between bloggers who write about Korea. Nanoomi wants to bridge those differences and build a community of bloggers who love Korea and Korean culture and so do I.

나누미가 영어 블로거와 한국어 블로거들에게 새로운 블로그 미디어 네트워크가 되어 소셜 번역 플랫폼 “루아”를 통해 한국에 대해 글을 쓰는 블로거들 간의 문화적 언어적 차이를 극복하는 바탕이 되기를 바랍니다.  저도 나누미와 같이 한국과 한국 문화를 사랑하는 블로거들의 문화적 언어적 차이를 극복하는 데 일조를 할 수 있도록 노력하겠습니다.

This is where the next generation of connection begins.

이러한 노력이 모이면 자연스레 다음 세대의 새로운 인연이 싹틀 것입니다.

마지막으로 한마디만 더 하고 연설을 마치겠습니다.

I’ve been in Korea for over two years and every day Korea amazes me with the breadth of its culture –  its art, food, architecture and literature. But the rest of the world does not yet know about this.

저는 한국에서 2년 동안 살면서 한국 문화, 음식, 건축 문학 등 매일 한국을 새로 발견하는 즐거움을 누렸습니다. 하지만 저만 아는 즐거움일까봐 안타깝습니다.

Blogging, is a personal, viral, and endlessly replicable tool for spreading knowledge. It is one of the tools that drive awareness of Korea, and drive Korea to its proper place in a globalized world. Together, you, I, Tatter Media, Nanoomi and Looah, and the blogosphere itself?

블로그는 개인적이고 전염성이 강하며 무한대로 복제가 가능하기 때문에 지식을 전달하는 데 매우 유용합니다. 한국을 알리고 한국이 지구촌에서 자리매김을 하는데 더 없이 좋은 도구입니다. 여러분과 저, Tatter 미디어, 나누미와 루아, 블로고스피어가 뭉치면

We can change the world and Korea’s place in it.

우리는 세계를 바꾸고 한국의 입지를 높이는 힘이 될 수 있습니다.
